The Cold War

Cold War lasted 4 decades 1947 -1989
it was a period of intense hostility between the Soviet Union and the united States.

But why didn’t the conflict end in war ?
-It emphasizes the choice to of foreign nations to deter and to contain. 
-to deter is to discourage through fear.
   - tied closely to both nations large nuclear arsenals
-    Balance of power logic
-    Deterrence often aggravated tension between the two nations
Containment – containment of the opposing ideologies and trading

Who or what caused the cold war:
Traditionalists – argue that Stalin caused the cold war because American Diplomacy defensive while soviets are aggressive and expansivc.
Revisionist-  believe the cold war was caused by Americans. They believe Stalins post war actions were moderate. 
 - they believe that US Foreign policy became harsher after Roosevelt died. Anti communist were place into  power.
  - the nature of US Capitalism which required for expansionism.
-    believe the martial plan of aid to Europe was a way to expand the American Economy.
The Post Revisionists believed that the other two were both wrong and that the cold war was inevitable because of the postwar structure of the world.  The weakened Europena nations created a power vacume that the two superpowers could not help but get involved in.


When did the cold war begin and end ? 1947 -1989
Why ? Balance of power was threatened, 3 approachest.

Was the cold war inevitable ?
It was highly likely because it of the bipolar structure of world power at the time .  It was likely that both sides would be sucked into a power vacume and not be able to disengage. 
The depth of the cold war was not inevitable, it was excacerbated by the politic

If not how could it have been avoided ? 
better communications between the two countries, also if domestic politics conflicting ideologies had not been exaggerated so much as to induce terror for both sides.

What is containment ? How did the us use it and what was the USSSR response ?
During the war the us wanted to contain the soviet union,. The united states helped Yugoslavia  split from the USSR to weaken the soviets, even though it meant helping a communit nation.  The us then decided to contain communism and entered into the Vietnam war to stop the spread of communism there. The Us also blockaded cuba and underwent the bay of pigs invasion.

Technically Nuclear warfare, if left on a lowgrade scale is morally justifiable because it fits the just war theory. Distinctions must be made between civilians and military.
what is the relation of nuclear weapons to international relations apart from nuclear detterance.

If the option of deterrence is not the use for unconventional weapons such as nukes that it’s a catalyst to excacerbate conflicts.  Detterance wise it lets small countries challenge big ones, and it lets stronger nations can better threaten and deter adversaries.

How are nuclear weapons different from conventional ones, and how has the advent of nuclear weapons fundamentally changed the way that nations behave?
It encouraged the resoning “If you attack me first I will attack you back, but I will hit you so hard it will make you wish you hadn’t attacked me in the first place. “  Nuclear weapons are so powerful many nations have deamed them immoral in war times. H bomb in particular. The speed and size of a nuclear war went from 8 hours to 30 minutes and this was something no one in the world wanted.

Hobbes believes that without government every man is at war. He believes that man is inherently evil.

States are representative of large scale individuals, rather concentrating the power of the individual and placing it into large and larger amounts. However this is challenges by the reality of a large number of countries. There are ordering mehanisms to states to observe peace. Greed and Fear are the prevailing reasons for the formation of government.
What form of government is formed ?
What produces justice?
Justice is produced by order. If government is not produced in the form of one entity then your just replicating nature at a regular scale.
